Shanghai has retained, or reinvented, a vitality lacking in Beijing. Many of the country's artists have gravitated toward the southern city, where the pace is fast and the city is full of political, social and historical contradictions. While many of the artists featured in ShanghART gallery have drawn on the traditional methods for which Chinese art was once so famous, they have also turned their attention to more controversial subjects and styles. Other artists are venturing into areas of new and mixed media, experimenting with video and installation.

ShanghART has become a focal point for gathering together a new generation of contemporary Chinese artists and is the first gallery of its kind in the country. Many artists on permanent exhibition here have already exhibited all over the world, while the gallery also nurtures new artists from the city and beyond. Given China's recent history, all of these artists are pioneers. Even if you can't visit, the ShanghART website draws a good picture of the current scene and its vitality is inspiring.
